Dear Self

Dear Self

Letters we write ourselves are so often vague.

We say that we’ll get through this,

Or that it all goes away.

We know this isn’t true.

See self, we have a history with trauma

And avoiding our problems,

Or avoiding our mistakes.

We probably do it then

As we do it now,

All this time ago.

No one knows us better than we do.

But then again,

That doesn’t say much, does it?

Self, whatever you’re going through right now,

You will keep going through it.

These unclear messages I send to you won’t aid you.

You will still be traumatized just as you were

All this time ago.

But self,

I hope you’re doing better.

I hope you achieved a goal or two.

I hope these indistinct words find you well.

And I hope you know us

A little bit better

Than all this time ago.
